TUCSON — The Catalina Foothills Unified School District took up the issue of advertising on the districts’, as well as individual school’s websites during its February meetings.
This is thanks to a law, which took effect in November of last year, permitting a school to place advertisements on both a district’s and a school’s website.
That’s not to say a school district is going to be permitted to advertise anything it wants.
The law stresses that any advertisement must be age-appropriate. For example, it cannot contain anything that is illegal for minors to participate in like tobacco, alcohol, gambling, drugs, and even political ads.
Ads must also comply with the state’s policy of abstinence first and cannot have any images that are harmful to minors, like pornographic images.
The money made from this venture, which is believed to be one of the first in the state, will be put into a fund that is only for revenue from the website. The money from this fund will be used only for pupil related costs as determined by the district. The board passed the motion into policy 5-0.
