TUCSON — Although it wasn’t a dominant victory, the Catalina Foothills girls proved they are the dominant program in the state. With a 1-0 win over Prescott, the Falcons girls won their fifth state title since 2003, but their first since 2007.
Although the Falcons had dominated the competition over the previous three games, the win over the Badgers came down to one play.
Midfielder Jenna Glad’s attempted pass was intercepted by a Prescott defender, but she misplayed the ball and it skirted down the right sideline. Glad out ran a trio of Prescott defenders and made a beeline for the goal.
Her speed ensured that it was just between her and Prescott goalie Briana Williams. Glad blasted a shot into the back of the net that put the Falcons up 1-0 in the 52nd minute.
Although they scored just once, the Falcons set the tone early, especially Emily Lai. Lai and the Falcons got a number of chances early, but could not finish and the game was scoreless in the first half.
The rest of the playoffs were much easier for the Falcons. They outscored their first three opponents 14-0 and showed why they were the best team in the state and one of the top teams in the nation.
The Falcons got a manner of revenge in their 3-0 win over Flowing Wells in the state semi-finals.
