TUCSON — It may be summer, but that does not mean the athletes at Catalina Foothills are taking time off. Most of them are competing at the club level and here is a re-cap on how some of them are doing while school is out.
Volleyball
There is a Foothills feel to the Zona Volleyball Club and the 16 & Under teams they are sending to Phoenix for the Volleyball Festival. Falcons’ girls coach A.J. Malis is coaching the team that includes two Catalina Foothills players. Sheridan Couture and Lauren Franz are representing the Falcons in the tournament that began June 28 and ran through July 3.
Two other players with Foothills ties will be traveling to Reno that same week to compete with the Zona 18-1 team. Recent graduate Desiree Scott, who will play for New Mexico State, and senior-to-be Michelle Snyder are on the squad that will compete at the 2010 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships.
Boys Soccer
Five Foothills boys soccer players were on the Tucson Soccer Academy teams that reach the quarterfinals of the US Youth Soccer 2010 Far West Regionals in Albuquerque.
Falcon standouts Ian Palmer and Josh Landau were on the 92 Boys Red team in the 18U Division.
They opened up the tournament with a 1-1 draw with Arsenal Co Gold, then beat AZ Pros White 3-1. They closed out the preliminary rounds with a 2-1 loss to the United Gold of Santa Rosa.
In bracket play the Boys Red lost 3-2 to United Black of Snohomish, Washington.
